First CEL 2014 X5 50i

I will say upfront I dont have a scanner

BUT...

Since I bought my baby in July 2023 she has hesitated a bit off the line for an only an instant.

I am thinking that the plugs/wires have turned on the CEL finally.

am in in the ball park for whats wrong?

We could guess all day long...and it is still shooting darts at the board. The CEL is related to the car's emissions system...and without the code that indicates which sensor set the fault...its all a crap shoot.

There are multiple systems involved, fuel, ignition, air, transmission...and the CEL could be related to any of them.

Take a look at the DTC (diagnostic trouble code) chart below which is what the generic OBD II code readers will reveal. If you don't have a scanner...in the USA most states you can drive to most auto parts stores (Advanced Auto, AutoZone, Pep Boys, O'Reilly's, etc) and they will pull OBD II codes for FREE. Check if they do this in Canada, too.

Plug codes are :misfire" type codes right?
Is it possible to have misfire cod=des but the X5 does not lose power at all except for the 30 sec time at start.

Well....

I just went out on lunch and started the BMW and after 3 starts in quick succession the CEL cleared. Does this mean it wasnt serious? will the code still be in memory if I get access to a scanner?

This is a generic code... i believe there should be a P code or something a bit more specific. try to find a place with a better scan tool?

Also, do you know how old your battery is?

A simple google search for OBD II U0097 comes up with this: https://U0079.autotroublecode.com/

(it took awhile for the page to load...so give it a chance before dismissing it)

The OBD II DTC chart that was posted above also points in a direction based on the 1st character of the DTC...here's the chart again to help explain what may have happened:

If you haven't already, I would recommend Bimmerlink/Bimmercode. You'll be able to troubleshoot this kinda stuff a little easier and more convenient.

sometimes when the battery gets older with these BMWs, they start to throw codes unrelated. or if your car sits outside and its super cold.

Good to know. It does sit outside. It was quite cold the other day.

Yeah, I was about to suggest getting OBD adapter and buying the app. Easy and fast, keep in in the glove box so you can read codes and get info quickly.

Did you look up P0E47? From what I found it’s “hybrid/EV battery pack” related. I’m guessing your 50i isn’t a hybrid…but perhaps it has something to do with your batteries.

I am REALLY leaning towards spark plugs/coils. But I guess I will have to leave it to the professionals with their expensive code readers.

Appt should be friday. I will let you all know the report.

Well if you still have original battery from the factory, then yes.

Yup!
Also voltage is showing 11 volts running on the dash cluster. It starts fine in the cold and all but starting to throw codes as shown.
