TPS is built in????

WTF I am still learning about this beautiful machine.

Shop called me to refund me $300+ as I asked for new sensors with my winter tires. They said you dont need them, and refunded me,

I cant believe I didnt know this.

The shop has certainly advanced in my eyes!

$300 is a bit high regardless. TPMS last between 5-8 years depending on conditions. If you didn't need them replaced, no need to charge you. They aren't "built in." Theyre just like any other TPS with a battery that can go bad or wear out over time.

It was $240 plus tax, Canadian.

I thought though that the TPS was built into each rim - and if you change rims you lose your TPS, I know thats how other brands work.,

OMG just realized the shop likely moved the TPMS from my all season tires/rims to my winters.

He's in Canada, Canadian spec cars use FTM (differential rotational speed monitored by abs sensor). There are no TPMS sensors in the wheels on Canadian spec cars. US spec cars use the TPMS sensors in the wheels. You can thank Ford/Firestone for that

TPMS sensors react quicker and the system can be coded to show tire temperature as well. If you buy the TPMS sensors, the antenna (receiver) is already built into the DSC module, so you can code TPMS rather than FTM to the cars CO (vehicle order) and get the functionality the US cars have

Ditto blue dragon. You can tell which system you have by the words on the iDrive screen.

If you have the FTM system (flat tyre monitor)...that's what it will say on your screen. Loss of tire pressure is determined by wheel rotation with your ABS wheel sensors facilitating the function of this system:

If you have the TPM system, then that's what your screen will say...this system uses the sensor in the wheel to determine the loss of pressure...but it also sends temp data, too...which can be displayed on the screen:

I'm in the USA and my Audi uses the rotation method too. My X5 has the TPMS and shows the pressure and temp per tire above. Pro's and Con's of both I suppose.

If you have the TPM system…and it doesn’t show temp & PSI…then you’ll need to activate the coding. Its simple as apple pie if you have coding software like Bimmercode:

my E70 uses tire rotation to sense a flat, as well. No sensors in the wheel - less cost, works fine.

BMW has been using these two different systems for a while. You can see in the chart below that the e46/e90/e39/e60/e61/e63/e65/e65/e66/e53/e83/e52/e85 models had the indirect FTM/RPA system (wheel rotation) and/or the direct TPM/RDC system (sensors inside the wheel). They could be standard or optional:

Yep! Forgot to warn...if you code something new to the HU...you will lose some settings you have stored. Which is the reason I don't code the seasonal greetings...the Merry Xmas start up screen isn't worth re-doing all the 1-8 programmable buttons etc.

Had the rotational detection in my C55 AMG. It worked sure but much rather know what my actual pressures are. Especially as they change drastically from Summer to winter with the temp change. Also helps know when my tires are warm enough to trust them when I pusher them. Haha
