DIY: Changing Recirculation Filter

Ok this is a super easy one and I really just followed an E70 video online but found BmW actually made it easier on the F15. This replacement is part of the 30 or 35k mile service combine with oil and cabin charcoal filters which I'll post later.

Part you'll need I got from amazon. OEM Bmw. Amazon says it doesn't fit but the part number is correct for the F15 and well it does fit.

1) filter is located in passenger footwell. No tools are needed.

2) remove three twist clips. Drop down panel and disconnect LED. Remove panel and put to side.

4) The filter is held vertically by this flat plastic piece that just slides to the left and pops out. May need a little bit of manipulation to get out but it just comes out.

5) pull down filter and discard

6) insert new filter and not to ensure the "air flow" arrows point into the system which means pointing to the left or toward the driver side.

7) replace plastic holder by lining up two ends and slide to the right. You will notice clips that need to go up into the housing.

Nice! Notice any increase in air flow after replacement?

Thanks! Can you tell if the OEM filter is made by Corteco? Based on the pictures, it looks like it.

https://www.rmeuropean.com/Products/...098-MFG87.aspx

Local supplier that I can swing by and pick one of these up from.

Looks like it. Idk it's installed and the box is trash. End of the day it's a filter for recirculation nothing crazy so as long as it fits I'm sure you're good.

Lol no it's just for recirculation only. My original was barely dirty after 36k miles. This is including even the charcoal filters. They didn't look that bad either.

I got this one from Amazon back in December:
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D2FLD91/

It's not OEM, but has activated carbon which the factory ones don't. And it does have the foam. So far performance seems pretty good.

Thanks for the DIY! Ordered one, as I'm sure the dealer didn't replace it on any of the last few services! I did the other filters last week, but I don't even want to know how old this one is, I'm sure it gets overlooked quite often!

It's not a yearly service if you look at the manual if I recall. I think it's 40k mike service.

The charcoal filter from amazon came yesterday and it's very very built compared to the paper thin OEM filter. However, my cabin filter looks like new when I took it out. I think the dealer changed the cabin filter during the oil change even though I declined it as they tried to charge me $250 for that.

I doubt that. It just probably doesn't need changing yet.

I changed it anyhow. Too lazy to return the filter. I saved the OEM filter though.

Hey new to bmw. Got x5 took the old filter out and for some reason the arrow is pointing towards the passenger side and not drive side. Just wanted to confirm the air flow arrow should point towards the drive side? Thanks in advance

Based on point 6) yes it needs to point toward the driver side as that’s where the fan is. Need to filter the air before it gets to the fan.
