Again no tools needed here. Bought the two filters off amazon. Went with the Mann option.

Mann Filter CUK 2941-2 Cabin Air Filter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003YNAUNC?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

Manual calls to replace at like 35k miles plus or minus. Mine didn't look too dirty but this should be the only time I need to do this.

1) pop hood and proceed to passenger side toward firewall

2) remove plastic cover. Fist pinch the clip at center between two plastic covers. Disconnect Velcro attached to wall closest to you as you stand against the vehicle and remove clip back to the left behind the swivel bracket.

3) after removing the cover you will see a large plastic box with two rectangles. This houses both filters. There is a clip at the front in the indent between the two rectangles. Just pull up on this with your finger. It comes up quite easy. It's also got two plastic fingers that stick out the back and guide into two slots. Get it out of this and slide out toward the center of the car and pull out.

4) clean up the area around where this is mounted. Pop out the old charcoal filters and pop in New ones.

5) reinstalling the filter blissing isn't the easiest cuz the inlet is this triangular shape opening that has to sit flush between the filters. But just move it around a bit making sure the two fingers are in the slots in the back and it'll sit flush and that clip in the front should just drop down smooth and easy.

6) reinstall cover.

Yes I have a couple. Coming from my last Merc and forum I've felt there wasn't as many (practically none) when I moved over to bmw. So I decided to tackle some. I'm a big DIY guy. Don't trust the Stealership for anything if I can do it myself or it's not covered under warranty (and that's only cuz it's free). Plus I like working with my hands. It's entertainment and gets me off the couch.

One follow-up: do you think 35K is too long an interval to go between changing filters?

If you are in a diesel and looking to get to the DDE, say to remove it for a flashing, you can go one step further. With the cabin filter housing cover off, look inside the housing towards the firewall, and there are 2 fasteners, remove them and the rest of the cabin filter housing comes out. This gives you access to the housing that holds the DDE. The diesel system looks a bit different than the picture above, since the DDE is in a plastic housing box. Undo the fasteners, lift the cover off and the DDE comes right out. Super easy.

I did. Wrote it up around here somewhere. It's also exactly same as E70 and there are some videos on YouTube. That one is super easy. 1-2 screws. Pull out the holder. Pull down the filter. Pop in new filter and replace holder with screws. Done. It's in passenger footwell.

Did this today, took 10 minutes (plus an extra 10 to vacuum all the leaves that were trapped under the initial plastic housing that comes out first). Thanks for the write up!

Damn.. dealer quoted me $199.99 for the cabin air filter and labor to change it.
$33 for the air filter on amazon.. can I just buy 2 for both sides or are each sides different filters?

This right here is a prime example of why dealerships aren't trusted. They think just because you drive an expensive vehicle you should pay more for the exact same parts. Ridiculous
