S63TU OC: +10.5 qt, Low Oil Warning?!
Hey guys,
Question: I did an oil change on my S63TU, put 9 qt in, measured low(warning). Added 1 qt, measured low again(warning). Drove it around. Added .5qt, measured low again(warning). Drove it around again. Measured low, again(warning). Is this normal? My first rodeo with the fancy 'no dipstick' engine. Checked for leaks, everything is sealed up nicely. Any idea's? (Regretting not measuring how much oil came out). |

In BMW TIS, I believe it states you have to start and idle the engine until it gets to normal operating temperature, then idle it for 3 minutes, then check the oil level

I believe that is what he did. I would assume that he has a bad oil level sensor, but to install a new one, he would need to drain his oil. As the oil would pour out of the oil pan otherwise.

Typically not, but everything is made in China these days, so who knows. If you had a real dip stick, you would probably find that you've overfilled your oil a little bit. Since, you have 10.5 qt. of oil in it now. I think that you might need to syphon some of it out. Our just drain it, save it, replace the oil level sensor and put that oil back in. Since it's new oil, no sense in throwing it away, just to spend more money for fresh oil. That's what I would do.

Sounds like a plan.
Question, can a syphon be done through the oil fill plug/point? I see everyone is going through the 'dipstick' point. Last edited by F85Life2017; 09-29-2023 at 10:12 AM.. |

When you purchase your new oil level sensor, ensure that it has an O-Ring, if not you will have to purchase one. I'm only saying that, as I'm not sure if the O-Ring comes in the box along with the sensor. Nothing worse then finding out that you need one, after returning home.

Also, I have never syphoned oil out. I would purchase the oil level sensor and O-ring then drain the oil in a catch basin, replace the sensor then refill the oil from the basin. Hopefully, someone can chime in. But I think that you can syphon it from the top of the engine thru the oil filler cap. I would avoid trying to drain it from the oil pan drain plug, because if you unloosen the drain plug up too much, all that oil will come pouring out. But if you choose to go this route just slowly loosen the plug until the oil starts to drain, then stop, when your sure that you drain out 1.5 qts, then tighten the plug back up.

Thank you for confirming this, much appreciated. I guess he will just have to drain the oil the old fashion way. Drain it then refill to the correct amount.

is it worth hooking this up to ISTA or the like before getting into it? I would try that first to see if there are any codes or notes that show up relative to the sensor.

What was the end result? Did it ever correct on its own or did you change the level sensor?
