Looking to buy a 2016 F85 X5M and have a few questions.

Looking to buy a 2016 F85 X5M...with 125,000 KM (77,000 miles). Well maintained, 1 owner, no accidents, and full BMW dealer service history.... TALK ME OUT OF IT. LOL

Dealer performing their own pre-inspection for me. What are the key major items I should have the dealer inspect / resolve prior to purchase?

What are some common problems I should address or look out for? My X5 Msport F15 xdrive35i was rock solid other than the transfer case going bad at low mileage.

Will my OEM BMW X5 F15 M467 19" rims/winter tires fit F85 X5M?
Looking to use my F15 OEM square winters for a new upcoming F85 purchase.

Currently has 20" F85 X5M oem grey rims. May be able to fit my 20" Msport F15 wheels with brand new Michelin tires too.

Also have the oem 18" spare tire from the F15... don't think it will fit.

And the biggest question is, should I buy 3rd party extended warranty for thus X5M? Worried about engine, transmission, and transfer case failure.

Thanks in advance.

What are the BMW 20” wheel (offset) for the f85? If you don’t know, you can use one of the online parts database sites like www.realoem.com or www.bimmercat.com and pull up the wheel diagrams.

Check to see if the offsets for the F85 wheels are the same or similar to the F15. If you don’t have the owners manual yet…you can also see what the winter tire sizes are for the f85…then see if BMW offered 19” or 20” winter tires.

Off the top of my head (without looking) I think your old 20” f15 wheels can be mounted with dedicated winter tires that can work on the f85 X5M. I’m not sure if 19” wheels/tires fit the f85…but again, a simple pull up of the wheel/tire diagrams or a look at the tire inflation f85’s tire inflation chart (in the owners manual) should reveal what size wheels/tires are recommended.

Good luck and congrats.

Love my '16. I bought it from a member here and it's been pretty much perfect. If you can verify that regular and preventative maintenance has been performed I encourage the purchase. If the 3rd party warranty is actually affordable and provides you with additional comfort then sure, get it.

Glad to hear that! What preventative maintenance would you recommend I get done?

I don't drive often, Maybe once or twice a week. Is it a comfortable daily driver though? Suspension and seats great? I'm coming from an Msport F15 X5 xdrive35i.

Have dealer inspect front driveshaft for slack by the transfer case, also rear tailshaft seal by the rear shaft can leak.

Your 18” spare should fit on the rear, won’t fit on the front, though…it won’t clear the brakes.

Your 20” wheels should be fine. May want to add spacers so they don’t look sunken in, though…but that’s an issue with the M Sport package vehicles anyway lol

At 77k miles I’d say have them check all the control arms front and rear, and to make sure the tie rods aren’t seized. And the other stuff as mentioned by others.

Where is the vehicle from? I got a FL car so no corrosion underneath. I’d be wary of buying a northeastern car.

I bought my 2016 50i (very similar engine) in April of this year with 93k miles. I’m now at just about 120k miles and love it!

Thanks guys. Dealer is trying to replace just 2 tires... its an AWD xdrive vehicle... bad idea... its 4 new tires and brakes or I'm not following through with this vehicle.

Also appears this car had its sunroof left open outside of the dealership before owner took delivery brand new... well it rained and soaked the interior and caused some electrical issues. None since they fixed it but still... also had rear main seal and transmission seal replaced already... not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Yeap I think I'm done trying to buy one now LoL. This one had too many problems and leaks and potential catastrophes for such an old overpriced M car.... Its sad because they look/drive phenomenal...

usually BMW dealers are a little more particular on what they resell. I also wouldn't say a well maintained, 77k x5m for 32.8k is a overpriced.

1 owner all original, no accidents and no paint work, and every single service record from the dealership since day one... owner looked after it... just oil leaks and diff leaks early... Already replaced rear main seal... I can't believe how poorly unreliable this particular X5M has been. Oh well..
