My car before the BMW was an '07 Porsche 911 and I put a Fister Exhaust on it which is essentially a bypass around the muffler. I loved the change in tone.
Putting around town there is not much pressure as most the exhaust goes thru the muffler. Put it in Sport and the exhaust is starting to bypass the muffler for a nice subdued V8 sound. It wouldn't turn your head around on the street, but if you know what a v8 sounds like you would know there is a V8 in my truck which is perfect for me
2 hours in the shop, $275 out the door, and a nice little change
FWIW...
"Uno Mas" had only one post, and it was this story here. I wish he included a video... I'm sure under load, this exhaust-bypass hack might actually produce some nice throatiness

Hoping to revive this thread 🤞🏼.

Anyone had a Mandrel built custom exhaust system on their X5/6 M50i?

Mandrel bent custom likely won't make any difference compared to a complete AA system (also mandrel bent?) with HF cats, only cost more $ and time to figure out.

If the X5 was an NA not Turbo, getting all bends etc perfect, might have made a difference.
IMHO; With Turbos and it being an X5, not a supercar, going full custom is a waste of money.

The only advantage with custom, over what many people here have done, is that you could get a less restrictive X-Pipe (or H-Pipe), compared to the inexpensive stamped X-pipes that seems to be the only options available to buy "off the shelf".

Thanks 1norseman. Thinking of going Res delete with x-pipe for now and leaving rear muffler intact. Let's see how that turns out.

Also seriously considering adding KW V3 Coilovers.

Stock muffler is quite restrictive, so from a performance point of view, you won't gain much. Also, you might be better off installing an H-pipe, than an X-pipe.
If you go back to my posts in this thread, you can see a picture showing how some or maybe most the store bought X-pipes are built. Can be quite restrictive/ disruptive to flow, instead of free flowing.
If you have the V8 and want to hear it rumble, you will need to do a muffler delete.
When it comes to the suspension, many good threads on the forum, for what to do. KW is a good choice.

Check this tread by Cbozz:
https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1669185

From what I can see, the right and left side are separated inside the muffler, by a perforated plate.
I guess you can call that "an x-pipe of sorts".

Definitely getting the muffler delete.

My only reservation is that most that have done it have an X5 while mine is an X6 with a valve actuator. Not sure what impact that will have on my SAV.

Opinions welcomed.

Appreciate this thread was started way back in 2017 and I'm very late to the party.

BUT, my 2017 X6 M50i is booked in for a muffler delete on the 11th of May. I already had the two resonators deleted and replaced with an x-pipe a few month's back.

I appreciate many on this thread who have done the mod are no longer active, but if you are, and think the mod was a bad idea in the long run, please speak now or forever hold your peace! 😂

I'm taking my 50i in the next couple weeks to get the muffler mod done as well. From what I've read, you'll want to leave the X-pipe in but put the resonators back. The resonators and X-pipe will help eliminate any drone that you would get from deleting the muffler

Just done a muffler delete replaced with 2 x Vibrant resonators in its place (also retained the OEM resonators), an X pipe plus some quad tips…it now sounds like it should have done leaving the factory and there’s no drone on the slow twisties or on the highway. In fact not much louder than stock at 70mph while cruising but a lovely throatiness and burbling now when idling and at lower speeds.

My resonators are already removed and replaced with an x-pipe.

Will remove muffler and see how loud it is and then if needed, will add the resonators back on. But hoping I won't need to 🤞🏼.

So to clarify my set up kept the 2 stock resonators but I did add an X-pipe and then essentially I replaced the muffler with 2 more resonators. So I can only imagine no resonators and a full muffler delete will be VERY loud!!

Agree. However (just my opinion), when I removed the two resonators and replaced with the x-pipe, the car didn't seem to have gotten any louder (if any). So whilst I expect a considerable increase in sound after the muffler is removed, I'm not sure if having kept the resonators would have made much of a difference?

Will definitely do before and after video/audio clips.

Thanks to everyone of the posters over the years who've shared their setups and video clips/sound clips, made working out what I wanted nice and easy..

I've went down the following path after lurking this thread for about 8 months:

First: Deleted the stock resonators and put in an X-pipe with stock muffler

Results: Way more pronounced "V8" tone, especially on vacuum when off throttle, less crackly overrun, more deep and burbly, overall volume is mostly the same unless over 50% throttle under 3k rpm, then about 10-15% louder. WOT the volume didn't seem that much different.

Second part, loved the idea of the vibrant ultra quiets and the videos posted by pennsiveguy(?)

Setup is now: Stock downpipes, deleted resonators, 2.5" X pipe, into 2x Vibrant ultra quiet resonators (part # 1142, the 2.5" in/out piping) into quad stepped, angle cut double wall 3.5" quad tips

Results: Love the volume, I'd say about 35% louder than stock. Without the resonators I think there's a touch of low drone only between 1150-1300 RPM, but it doesn't seem to go through the entire car, nor did my partner notice/give me any grumbles in the car.
Super deep/bassy exhaust sound now, thunderous overrun now with really nice V8 tones.

Here's a quick video of me stuffing around at night playing with the exhaust.

NaTe-Von I'm in a similar situation with my 2017 X6. Deleted the resonators and added a custom x-pipe.

Now booked in next week for a muffler delete with vibrant resonators as back up in case muffler delete is too loud. Also planning on adding quad exhaust tips.

Will post clips when done.

meds1976 So with the muffler delete it will essentially be straight piped?

There was a person on YouTube to had a video revving with the same setup:

I think they're a member on here too if I remember correctly. Doesn't seem insanely loud but sounds really nice
