Between 185 and 190 mph. The gearing does not allow for 200 mph..

Best regards,

CSL

My guess and simulation results with CarTest indicate top speed will be just a bit over 180 mph and if the M-DCT cars is geared just right it could be a few mph faster than the 6MT.

Gear limited speed (either in vacuum or if it had 0 drag) is 204 mph using an ideal calculation for tire diameter. If you use the rule on the US Michelin web site the tire comes out slightly smaller and therefore you get a top speed of 195. The car will be drag limited not gear/redline limited.

Tire diameters are: std. calculation:
Without tolerances: [(265 x 0.4) x 2 + (18 x 2.54)] * pi = 2.10 m

Michelin website:
63,360 divided by revolutions pre mile = rolling circumference in inches:
For the 265/40ZR18 PS2 Michelin states 790 revs per mile so 63,360 / 790 = 80.202 inches = 2.037 m.

Keep in mind that simply a new tire vs. well worn tire would make more of a difference than these variations as well!

That sounds about right. The E46 was just around 170.

That's it: For the 18" wheels the average circumference is 2.02m, that makes a gear limited top speed of 188.6 mph (19": 187,7, 2.01m circumference).

As I has said already else where on other threads, that when the M-DCT box arrivals with it's 7 gears the M3's topspeed WILL increase and the gearing will NOT be set up so that it's 7th and the manual's 6th will be the same.

The circumference as South states will actually be small due to the weight of the car compressing the bottom of the tyre slightly and so reducing the actual speed.

I don't mind it being limited to 250 km/h... Where am I going to even reach those speeds? Where do you exceed? Highway? Looong track?

Was this with GPS speed measuring? German speedometers ar notoriously optimistic.

I have known V8 S4s and Mk1 RS4s which have been reaching speeds in excess of 170~175mph so I wouldn't doubt that the CSL could reach over 180mph, the same goes for the new M3 but there is a big difference between achieving 180mph and over 200mph.

If the top speed is drag/power dependent, you will most likely need a lower ratio for the DCT to be faster.

I believe top speed in the E46 M3 is achieved in 5th. A closer ratio 7-speed would give you the option of 5th or 6th.

An E46 M3 without a limiter on it would struggle to do more than 170mph +- 4 mph. Back in the day mine would hit an indicated 165 and stop but BMW's have speed errors of up to 10% in the speedometer. (I have a letter for BMW NA about this). So if you state going 170mph you could only really be doing 153 MPH which is feasible.

Here are the M3 gear Ratios

Final Drive 3.64:1

1st Gear Ratio 4.23:1
2nd Gear Ratio 2.53:1
3rd Gear Ratio 1.67:1
4th Gear Ratio 1.23:1
5th Gear Ratio 1.00:1
6th Gear Ratio 0.83:1

red line is 8,400 rpm as you guys know.

Best regards,
