Finally got Homelink working

After several unsuccessful attempts at programming my garage opener, I came Across these instructions for the e39, which did the trick. Much more detailed than the M3 manual.

Hardest part is when you have to hold down the mirror button and remote button to register it.

The trick is in the placement of the remote and mirror when you're getting the mirror to register the remote code. On my 08 M3, I literally had to touch the remote to the mirror.

I just programmed my 2012 X5 last night, and it was a breeze, and did it on the first try. I think something was changed in late build models where it is now easier to get the mirror to register the remote.

I don't think the range of the Homelink is very good. I got so frustrated with it I just use a separate remote instead

Garage List
2023 Model 3  [6.50]
2022 T4R TRD Pro  [5.00]
2011 1M  [6.67]
2014 991.1 GT3  [10.00]
Instructions from the manual is frustrating to read. I too had to have my garage remote literally touching the mirror from the side to correctly capture the frequency code. On my 335i, I can do it 6 inches apart and will register.

I just setup the homelink on my new car. Took me a while to figure out the right combination of steps - since there are all kinds of varying instructions on the internet. Here's what worked for me.

1) Car off

2) Turn car on, but do not start. (Press start button without foot on brake)

3) (optional) Hold 1 & 3 buttons on car for 30 seconds until small light next to button 1 blinks quickly. This erases old codes

4) Hold garage door remote near your rearview mirror. Then hold the button on the garage door remote and the 1,2 or 3 button on the rear view mirror for about 5 seconds until the light near 1 button starts to blink rapidly.

The car's homelink can now emulate the frequency and format of the code sent by the remote.

If you have a very old garage door opener that now works, that's it. But you may also consider replacing that garage door opener, because as you can see - it would be very easy for anyone to open it.

For modern garage door opener units, you'll need to continue...

5) Press the program button on your garage door receiver (motor that's mounted to the ceiling)

6) Quickly go to the car and hold the button in the car that you programed in step 4.

Your garage door receiver should flash a light or somehow indicate that the programming worked. Let go of the button on the rear view mirror when it does.

7) Press the same rear view mirror button for about 2 seconds to test. Garage door should go up or down.

The newest openers by LiftMaster (and maybe others) require a HomeLink repeater to work in 3+ yr.old cars, like in my '12 M3.

Learned that the hard way.

Can you skip #3 if no codes were ever stored? And once the car is programmed, will that remote still work or does it needs to be reprogram? Guess what I'm trying to ask is that garage door remote and the car can only be work on one but not both

Finally got it to work by following the directions on Homelink.com. No need to do the remote learning step at all. Hold all 3 buttons until light goes out, hold the button you're programming until solid light (2 seconds), hit learning button on garage door control unit, push and hold Homelink button for 2 seconds, then again, and success. Finally!

I recently successfully programmed mine and the variable appeared to be the distance I held the opener transmitter from the homelink. Took me three of four tries following the directions in our owners manual but it worked.

The range on mine is so poor. I literally have to be in front of the garage door before it will work.
