BMW Advanced Eye Front and Rear

I have ordered one of these units since as well recording driving, they also activate on possible break-ins or detected motion of vehicle. Good piece of mind for me.
Does anyone have any personal experience of use?

How much was the total price plus installation? Can you remove it from vehicle to vehicle?

Found this on the bmw.com website:

http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/acc...l?proDsId=9872

It looks like it costs around $400 USD plus installation (about 1.5 - 2 hours).

Installation instructions:

I believe the specs is not as good as the aftermarket.
I have been using BlackVue DR650GW before BMW released theirs.

I wonder if I can code my car to use the OEM cameras and store the video to a USB. That would be great.

Anyone in the United States buy and install this? I'm told by my BMW parts department that the part number isn't good for the U.S.

Purchased and installed - Northern CA

I purchased this unit (PN 66212359954) for $360 from eurotrader777@yahoo.com. I had my local shop (European Auto Works in Mountain View) install the unit in my 550xi.

Installation was very challenging. I believe the US wiring is different from what is noted in the BMW installation guides. After a lot of calls to BMW HQ, the unit was installed but not quite to spec. The unit records as if it is in gear when the car is on -- it should change recording modes based on D vs P when the car is on. The recording with the car turned off is per spec. Installation cost was ~ $800. I probably wouldn't have gotten the unit if I knew the total cost was going to be ~ $1200. Having said that, I like having synced forward and rear view video from a well designed system.

Thanks so much for the info! I contacted my BMW parts department and they said that BMW may release a valid part number for the U.S. soon.

You're welcome. It is available on eBay -- search for eBay item number: 221856875693.

That's a good price, but your installation story scares me, and I'm not paying $800 for installation. I'll wait and see if BMW releases a US part number soon. Thanks again for the info!

I really like mine.
Had to have another installation as faulty rear uit with first issue.
Very pleased with security it provides.

Alternate solution - Garmin Dash Cam 35 (European Version)

Hi,

I wanted to install a front facing camera in my other two cars. Instead of the Advanced Car Eye from BMW, I installed the European version of the Garmin Dash Cam 35 -- because the US version does not record audio.

I purchased the European version from a seller (burrowsgps) on eBay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Garmin-Dash-...-/221940086887

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-t...rod517726.html

It works pretty well; the unit can be powered off of the switched line for the sunroof (as done for radar detectors).

I got news today from my BMW parts specialist that these might never be available to the U.S. market. He said he will continue to check and keep me updated.

I installed the BMW Advanced CarEye months ago and am very happy with it.

If you want to easily reach the special events recording button, you need to place the camera just behind the left side of the rear view mirror - and there is only a very narrow optimum zone that allows enough mirror swiveling. I played with double sided tape until I found the right position to fix the camera on the windscreen. See the picture from the driver's perspective to get a rough idea.

The camera's GPS antenna needs to stay far (10") from the mirror's stem, something interferes there, so I placed it invisibly left of camera against the top windscreen rim.

Finally I painted the camera's front in matte black, making it almost invisible from outside - and put black tape over a blue LED visible from outside on the back camera.
