What's all this fuss about weight?

I sometimes read threads about the weight of our cars with a bit of amusement. A lot of folks worry about finding just the right car with a carbon roof, or adding this or that part, based on how much it weighs.

Here's how I see it folks: These cars are big, honkin', big-assed, titsy fun-mobiles. Their attraction lies not in how light and svelte they are, but in the miraculous alacrity with which they move all that high-caloric deliciousness down the road. They are built for both comfort and speed, baby! You really can have it all.

So, my advice is to not worry about whether a carbon roof saves xx lbs over a sunroof car, or whether the 220 wheels weigh less than the 359 wheels. Get the wheels you like! Get the carbon roof because it rocks!! Even with its high-tech carbon, aluminum, and plastic pieces, the car still weighs in at an astonishing 3500 lbs. But it absolutely kicks ass in all its bodacious glory. Climb onto that big old girl and hang on for the ride.

Everyone just likes modifying their toy. A CF roof is not mega weight savings in contrast to "overall vehicle weight" but the fact it's a vast reduction at that height on the vehicle mass has quantifiable effect. Take 30lbs off both doors......cool but not really an effect you may feel. Take 30lbs off the roof and I guarantee you will feel less "chassis sway" going into a turn you have experience running.

Ran the 1/4 mile in mid to high 12's with just myself. Ran it again with three passengers and ran mid 13's. Weight is everything.

Extra weight works like a chute on the rear bumper...

Oh, I'm not suggesting that weight is meaningless. To the contrary--I spent a lot of time and effort pulling it out of my track cars over the years. My point is that the E92 M3 is a big girl, and that's just fine by me.

Eh everyone has their own thing. The thing about most bmw Porsche enthusiasts, everyone prefers the little things differently. I prefer a highly optioned rare color sedan like the one I have while others want a stripped no option coupe. I'd say the people you're referring to are split into two categories; one who wants the lightest package to start with for track purposes and the other to have the lightest package to start with to enjoy as is on the street in the E9x chassis rawest form. I'd love to drive a no option sedan manual to see how it compares to my highly option dct sedan.

The carbon roof isn't as much about weight as it is about lowering the center of gravity of the car. This will affect handling and weight transfer and that matters, especially if you bought the car for its handling prowess. This car would've been a true beast if it came from the factory 500 lbs lighter.

I get were the OP is coming from. For the majority of the community, the cars are street driven 75% of the time or more. In that environment, the cars weight is less important, and therefore shouldn't be something to worry about.

For a track specific car or someone who spends the majority of their time doing HPDE track days or simply want a simpler, lighter car, weight matters. Not just total weight, but were that weight is located.

The reality is this; Even the lightest spec'd E92, still requires significant weight reduction and chassis/suspension/braking reinforcement to be a true track destroying monster.

Nah. It's my daily driver--a street car.

Good track cars make bad street cars, and vice versa.
