Which X5 is most reliable?

I'm thinking about getting a used BMW SUV and I want to explore which model year has the highest reliability. Please recommend.

I'm looking for gasoline version.

I think there were some minor issues with 2014 and 2015, like dying iDrives, but nothing major. Overall, 35i is a very reliable vehicle.

The most reliable tends to always be the last year of production. For the F15 that would be 2018.

The one that's well maintained that's not following BMWs crazy long service intervals.

Also a little luck. I usually avoid first model year.

Any of the ones made by Honda.

As a wise old friend of mine say..... if it has tires or tits.....

In all seriousness, it seems the six holds up better than the eight. The rest of it seems like luck of the draw. Some go trouble free, some aren't as lucky.

The one you drive the least, no all kidding aside my wife has 60k on her 50i and although I have only owned it since 40k we have had no problems with it other then in needing a couple quarts of oil every 4-5k miles. The dealer justed changed the plugs and coils free of charge cause was have drivetrain malfunction. Even though the 50i has been good so far I would say the 35i would probably be more reliable, I had a x3 prievously with the n55 and never had any issues Engine wise, just change the oil.

: or google.

All F15s are as solid as can be. Several running from 0-100k+ miles. Regardless of engine. There are no known major issues in either engine as of yet and the car is already out of production which should tell you something. Even the first year. I'm running a 2014 with 50k miles and nothing more than a couple hundred on wishbone suspension parts that were covered by warranty if caught in time and some plastic oil breather lines which are cheap and easy to replace which were upgraded in 2016. And yes some issues with iDrive resetting while driving which mine does occasionally (1 per 2 months or so). Leather cracking on driver seat for all years and wheels corroding around hub on all years.

F15, generally, is a well-built platform; however, my personal preference is to usually buy the later years of a model.

Thanks, my intention was to replace my aging 2010 Honda Pilot EX-L, which is still faultless and pretty comfortable.
So, I'm a little hesitant.

Of all the model years of the X5, the looks of the 2013 is heart-melting.

Don’t be; it’s a solid build.

F15 > E70 every day. Especially for reliability. New engine in F15. N63 vs N63tu

F15 is build on the same platform, as E70. Just different body, interior and electronics. So mechanically it was pretty reliable from day 1.

F15 2015+, Sdrive, no dealer/rental fleet, one owner, the less option the better and cheaper (less things to break), no mods, and not too low/high mileage (average 10-12k mls/year).

Why sDrive for an SUV?
Less complexity?

I think he means less chance of drivetrain malfunction etc.
You don't need to worry about tire size either, in terms of front and rear being close to maintain xDrive balance.

All of the X5's F15 except the 2017 have above average reliability. From an owners poll.

My personal research returned the water pump as an occasional issue for the x35i. I did not research the 5.0.

The battery can also be an issue, depending on driving habits, per the SB.

Overall, the the X5 is a very solid reliable platform. Change the oil regularly and don't neglect preventative maintenance. I expect over 150k miles on the engine.

150K miles of engine life expectancy? That'd be a blasphemy for the BMW brand. This engines should be able to last at least double that.
