621 wheel on NYC / tri-state roads
Does anyone have experience riding their 612 21” wheels on streets in NYC and tri-state area? What has been your experience? Also, I’ve seen some mention throughout these threads about switching to 20” during the winter. Why so, and what are repercussions if you stick with the 21” during winter? Thanks.

Well, with a 20” wheel you have that much larger a sidewall to deal with potholes, etc.

I ride with my 21's with no issues. Only once in the winter with my run flat snow tires I bent my wheel when I was doing 50 and hit a crater.. had to replace the whole wheel but I have a warranty so I had no issues

I have 21" 612s for summer and 20" 611s square set up for winter. All four tires are 285 wide. The 21 rears are 325 wide. I strongly suggest going to the 20s for winter. As someone else stated, the 20s have a larger side wall so you are less susceptible to blow outs or rim damage. Plus, a narrower contact patch is better for traction in the snow. The potholes have been craters the past few winters with all the snow.
You'll be fine in the summer with the 21s, just keep your eyes open. EDIT - I'll be selling my 611 winter wheels shortly. I pick up my 2022 tomorrow. I have to go look and see how much tread is left on the tires though. Let me know if you are interested before I post them up for sale.

I would also say keep your 21's for summer and get 20's for winter for all the reasons everyone is saying here. 20's are better suited for our NYC & NY metro area roads in winter. You'll probably save money in the long run PLUS less headaches while driving lol. Easy swap in spring and late fall. |

Just replaced a barrel on my forged wheels. Hit a piece of concrete sitting on the highway off ramp. Other than that freak accident I've been good on 21's/ Stock in the winter and 2 piece forged in the summer.

I ran these all year round (changed out the tires last year) for 4 years in NYC. Handled the snow, salt and ice with no issues, but did have to have the driver's side wheel repaired three winters ago after hitting a pothole. If interested, I can send more pics or if you're close to BK, I don't mind letting you see them in person. Asking $800, OBO
