Aftermarket Turbo inlet pipe solution for the F85/F86 S63TU platform
Hey folks,
i noticed last night that one of the more common failures in the engine bay managed to make its way into my car, so rather than go and spend $150 on the same crappy plastic part that has been a point of failure for so many boosted BMW’s since the n54 days, I have decided to create an aftermarket upgrade for our platform. I’ve reached out to my shop that has done custom work on my Supra as well as the x5 and we are currently in the process of designing a silicone inlet pipe solution. That being said: 1.) if there are any of you interested in the final product, sound off below and subscribe to the thread. 2.) I will be posting photos and updates on the development once we get the car in there for measurements and test fitting. 3.) if there’s enough interest within the community, we will release it to the public. Wish us luck! Picture of the OEM turbo inlets (intake boot) for reference: Last edited by mvrt; 01-14-2023 at 09:39 PM.. |

id be interested... mine recently fractured and I had it replaced but would rather go with silicone one since those are a lot better when it comes to heat cycling..

In as well. I replaced my passenger side two years ago then the drivers side about 2 months ago. They both broke when I was removing the RK intakes to clean the filters just at different times.

I would love to make even a titanium one but I leave that up to the shop owner. He’s been tuning all sorts of cars for a while and suggested we start with silicone likely for the same reasons you listed previously. I’ll def keep y’all updated!

I design supercharger systems (Corvettes only) for a living. Anything in front of the turbo or blower will be trying to collapse as it is almost under a vacuum.
When designing the inlet on my systems I had to make sure any silicone components were very short. Even a 6" long, 4" diameter coupler will start to collapse and get try to get sucked into the blower. I've had thousands of custom silicone hoses made over the years. You'd have to have stainless steel rings molded into the hoses to prevent this. You'll also need to make the hose at least 5-ply to make it rigid. It's amazing how much air is pulled into a turbo or supercharger. I've seen guys take the air inlet duct off but leave the short silicone coupler on and had it turn inside out, suck into the blower and destroy it. I even had one customer have a fan sitting on top of the radiator and the blower sucked the electrical cord in and destroy the blower. You might look into roto-molding. You can have hard plastic pieces made with short silicone couplers on either end. My intake ducts are made that way. I actually made my first C5 and C6 intake duct prototypes out of Bondo. Once I had the shape I needed I took it to a mold maker. You can even have labels made to go in the mold with your company name on it for a few cents apiece. Surfboard foam also works great for making different shapes and is very easy to form. You can glue pieces together as needed. That's what I use now.

Interested for sure!
Might as well design it into a full intake behind the grill! I’ve reached out to project gamma but they have yet to make an intake for our platform. Had it on my m6 and loved it. Side note they have proven that silicone or similar type of material(not sure what it is) is rigid enough not to collapse under high boost applications. |
