2015 BMW X5M 38k Miles - Check Engine Light On
After filling up with gas yesterday, the check engine light came on. Since we were near a BMW service center, we took the vehicle to the dealership and they checked the gas cap and reset the code. The check engine light disappeared. In addition, the service technican indicated that I needed to drive the car for some miles and start and stop the car for 3 times. That really confused me.
Well this morning, the check engine light (orange color) is appearing again. What are some things I need to check before taking it back to the dealership? I do have a Peake Research R5 FCX-3 code/reset tool for BMWs. Not sure if it will work on a 2015 BMW X5M. FYI.. I found this article. I'm wondering if I need to drive the vehicle for 20-40 miles for the light to disappear after retightening the gas cap. https://www.richmond-bmw.com/bmw-che...xoCbucQAvD_BwE Last edited by pglover19; 10-05-2024 at 10:49 AM.. |

Read the code and look it up to see what it is, if the dealer checked a gas cap and reset the code it must have been an eval leak code, mostly like you'll need a smoke test to see what's wrong which it sounds like you won't be able to do yourself..

Do you know if the Peake Research R5 FCX-3 code/reset tool will work on a 2015 X5M? The tool has the OBD connector.

check codes, but it sounds like you need new spark plugs and/or ignition coils. If stock they need to replaced every 40k ish miles. It tuned every 20k miles

You are probably going to need something that was made in the last decade.
Allot of people are going for something like a wifi adapter with android/iphone software. Something like a HMD universal/modBMW adapter with Bimmerlink/HMD Tuning (reads codes for free, thnx MHD) or any other app that uses wifi. ISTA does work with these wifi adapters. |

For the MDH, here is the vendors site. Just google the name "MHD Universal" and you will get allot of places that resell it. Find the closest to you.
https://mhdtuning.com/pages/mhd-wireless-adapter MHD App, free to scan codes. https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...eries&hl=en_US BimmerLink. - need to pay https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...rlink&hl=en_US You also have things like Carly, but i think it needs it's own specific adaper. |

Perhaps tell us what you are doing when you connect the tool. Are you turning the ignition on (pressing the START button with foot OFF the brake pedal) prior to trying to get the tool to retrieve the fault code data? Again, make sure you're connecting & using the tool correctly for retrieving OBD II fault codes. FYI..I have an old Autel Maxiscan MS300 OBD II scanner that I've had since my old e38/e39/e53 (1997/1998/2006) days...and it still works on my 2014 F15 X5 50i & 2015 F06 650ix GC to pull generic DTC (aka 5 digit "P" codes).

Before throwing money at coils & plugs...find out which sensors set the fault codes. This will send you in the direction of what needs to be diagnosed. Once you pull the 5 digit "P" code or 6 digit BMW hex code...google it or go to this website and select your engine (if there are multiples listed) and see if there's any info as to what may be the cause and/or a solution: https://bmwfault.codes/

Would constant misfires cause a bad oxygen sensor, or would a bad oxygen sensor cause misfires?
I ended up replacing the bad oxygen sensor and the spark plugs. Not cheap at the dealership. |
