X5 Maint needed or App Issue?
We have two X5's, 17 and 18, both 5.01 M sport pkg. 17 has 60K miles and 18 42K, regular maint and no issues I am aware of. Use the BMW App a lot and thus my question:
Both vehicles show brake pads, front and rear, due in 3,107 miles. BMW Genius won't talk to us because of the vehicle ages; closest dealer service reps don't return email or calls, talking to a rep means you have to drive to them and wait your turn to ask a question. I feel since the miles to service are the same, and never change as we add miles to the vehicles, it has to be some type of issue with the app but no one knows, just tells me we need to get pads changed if the app says its due. Anyone know whats up with these maint notifications that seem to be static and not reflect reality with the vehicles? Thanks in advance for your help |

Much of the service "due in" service you see in iDrive/App, is condition based. That equates to the car's brain using an algorithm that takes into account things like, time based, fuel consumption, high/low engine speeds, and trip duration derive the remaining life
Example: My rear brakes are "due in 3Kmiles", but that has been in a holding pattern on the same mileage for several months now. I've been driving more on the highway lately and have also started to drive like an old man. Thus the brake wear has slowed down and iDrive has recalibrated wear. There will be a point when you might trip a mechanical brake pad sensor that is located on driver's front and passenger rear pads. Once those are tripped, there is less than 2k miles remaining. Depending on the wheel and brake combination, you can actually peek in at the pads. I use the backing plate as a quick visual gauge. Example below: Compare pad material to backing plate, if:
