This conversation is suffering from basis risk.

You can't compare. You are looking at US MPG. The same car sold in the UK is advertised to achieve 47.9 Imperial (GSQ) mpg, which is US 39.9mpg. No one in this forum has achieved that so far, not with my downhill, not eqseric with a lower avg speed matching my mpg. I could totally understand Baunton 's comment. My guess is the laws are less stringent in the UK and BMW (and other makers), post the maximum achievable, as the disclosed mpg. But you are also right, we are seeing US 31mpg for highway easily beat here. And, as discussed in your article link.
