B-5 vs B-20 diesel grade?
Looking at the specs on the 35d Diesel engine the highest bio fuel content recommended is B-5 or 5% bio fuel. I'm seeing more and stations in my area selling B-20 or 20% bio fuel. Fact is there is now only two stations in my small town not selling B-20 including the commercial card lock fuel locations.
What is everyone's thought on running B-20 in these engines? What would be the conciquences of running it if it's the only fuel available?mseems like it might be very soon. One added benefit I've noticed is the B-20 seems to be .20 to .35 cents per gallon cheaper. Thanks in advance! |

It'll void the warranty if problems arise. I'd check with your local dealer about the problem of not having fuel to add to your car
Many times, b20 is fine but it is not "guaranteed" to be fine. Bio fuel may vary from place to place and that's why BMW won't stand by it. Sort of like not approving diesel fuel additives. Sure, most are probably ok to use but BMW has no control over what they add to it, so they refuse it all |

Agreed on the comments above for warranty. Biodiesel blends are inherently more "dirty" and would typically require you to change your fuel filter more often. I work in the construction industry and when running Bio blends in our machines, the filters dirty far more quickly.

The bio fuel blends are coming through the refineries so I can't see them being dirtier. I do know that if you add it to an old fuel system it will clog fuel filters because it acts as a cleaner. Just wondering what kind of damage could be caused. I think you guys are spot on with the problem being in the emissions systems. Found this is an article; "Fuel filters on the vehicles and in the delivery system may need to be changed more frequently upon initial B20 use. Biodiesel and biodiesel blends have excellent cleaning properties. The use of B20 can dissolve sediments in the fuel system and result in the need to change filters more frequently when first using biodiesel until the whole system has been cleaned of the deposits left by the petrodiesel." Minnesota is mandating B20 (state's soybean lobbyists at work). For that reason alone, I ditched the plan for a 35d and ordered a 50i.

I suspect the manufacturer's will adjust their requirements, their engine specs, and/or recommend additives they will sell. |
