Warning coding new software update
Ok guys,
I just got my x5 back from the dealer for a regular service appointment and the next thing I know is the truck had a new computer update. All my previous codes were gone ( that's expected ) but when I try to code it back, lots of module can't be read. I checked with #Opasha to fix the issue and it seems that the new 55.1 firmware update can no longer be coded. BMW put several restrictions to avoid any type of coding. So if you guys want to keep your presets or still be able to code by yourself....DO NOT do the software update from the dealer. I learn this the hard way and I'm still really disappointed. Spread the info !!!!!!! |

So as many of you know, I haven't received my car yet... This is honestly a complete deal breaker. Might sound stupid to some, but I was banking on many of these features. Like the key folding mirrors... Or the increased seat ventilation settings, that's the only reason I gave up terra interior so I can get the luxury seating... Not a good week! First taxes, now this!

The single thing that pisses me off in BMWs?
NO DIGITAL MPH DISPLAY WITHOUT CODING!!! Other things are small and come useful but the one thing that really pushes my button on every bmw I own is that.

You couldn't have said it any better! Digital MPH should be standard these days.

wow this sucks. I have the 6WB cluster installed If I was forced into a update I would lose it because the coding involved to be able to run it.
I guess it's a great excuse to let the SA know why I don't want the software updated and also because they can not update the software with out me installing the original cluster first(AFAIK) Crossing my fingers not having any problems with the car that would require a update because they could then pretty much force me into a update if the repair required it. This blows. Hopefully there's a way around it sooner or later. |

This is true. It stems back from 54.2 onward, which had been discussed a lot by many bmw forums and even in the coding thread. BMW seems to be making the shift to end coding by making it more difficult. I checked K-Bomb's files tonight and saw all the folders that could not be read due to the software update. The latest seems to be 55.1 that the dealer will put you at. Not much you can do if you have a necessary service appointment . It really is unfortunate.

See post #80 here by http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...=818922&page=4 shawnsheridan who is a coding god. Does not sound promising.
He reiterates here in post #235: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...php?p=17524400 VO coding is not a problem but FDL coding is per post #240 in the last link.

Also, 6WB has no fdl coding so reading ecu is not necessary for it.

Yeah, just flat out pointless decoding.

Time to formally write to bmw. Give us our simple codes enabled through settings. Or stop being so childish with 55+ lol

Most people want basic things like unlock doors in Park, lock in D. Mirror fold. Tire temp. etc. The rationale for turning off safety features and alarms is clear, but why I can't get turn signals in HUD when it can be coded that way?

I mean is this the end here? Or realistically just a big hiccup?

All hope isn't lost. Some modules should be able to be coded using older CAFD files. At least this is what shawnsheridan and I have discussed.

If anybody remembers back in the late 1990s and early 2000s dealers like Lexus, and Mercedes used to ask you things such as; When you press unlock on the key fob do you want all of the doors to unlock or just one? Etc. Days before on board computer settings were available to drivers at any given time. These were types of things they asked you when you came in for your first service on the car where the tech would code these settings in for you. So BMW do what Lexus used to do 20 years ago and help your buyers make the ultimate driving machine, their personal ultimate driving machine

Always loved BMW for (among other things) the ability to code things the way you like them... Now I guess it's time to prepare myself that after one of the visits to the dealership for a simple oil change, they'll also update the software (just because BMW tells them to, i.e. for all clients with software < X version - do a mandatory update) from 54.3 to w/e; and I'll have to start mashing the auto start/stop button to OFF every time I get into the vehicle, read the stupid legal disclaimers, and everything else that comes with it. Sigh.
