Highway Cruising

Am I the only one that feels that cruising over 75mph the x5 likes to dance around a little? Is it because of how high it is?

are you driving in Comfort mode?
I find the steering way too loose in comfort...switching to Sport tightens it up considerably.
On the interstate its a constant job to keep it straight, hopefully this will be addressed in an update.

It has been super smooth for me in any mode cruising at high speeds. Perhaps check your alignment?

Los Angeles to Las Vegas = 260 miles one way. Car was hitting 140 and felt super solid!

By the way no issues of the car moving around at 70+ mph. OP, can you provide more information about your car? 18", 19", 20" all season? Summer? What Line do you have? etc.

I do get a slight vibration after 90+ mph.. I believe this is a known issue with some when I was reading the Post your X5 issues here sticky thread.

Lots of things working against it. As previously mentioned...soft in comfort mode with the most vague steering I've ever felt, uber wide tires (I'm 285 up front, 325 in rear) that follow ruts or imperfections, high profile for cross winds. Overall, pretty planted all things considered...putting the M adaptive suspension in sport definitely helps if you have it.

Yea the x5 is always solid. I've done 120 without even trying. Shifting manually at 5500. I'm going to try a top speed run right before my service is up

I have noticed that on grooved concrete payments (dubbed quiet pavement in some markets), depending on the pattern and width of grooves, the car can dance around and be difficult to keep centered. It is far more noticeable when there are fewer and wider groove lines.

No stability issues here, anything more than expected with wide tires. I spend lots of time on the highway travelling for work. I'm typically in Sport mode 95% of the time.

Vibration at speed can only come from a balance issue - it may be more pronounced at specific speeds. Check for any of these as imbalance cause:

Improper original balance
Missing balance weight
Damaged tire or wheel

The dealer or any good tire shop should be able to diagnose your problem

The electric steering should be adjustable through coding. It is on audi cars. It may feel artificial but at least the wheel is steady. Maybe one of the coding gurus can jump in.

What you mean is you were going 140mph in Mexico, right?

This is a symptom found in every f15. I first thought it was caused by wind and runflats. Apparently not present in E70. It is a little better surprisingly in eco pro mode, which I drive constantly in due to this. Studded air tyres vs runflat summer tires = no difference. The comfort mode steering is just made too soft and this causes the need to make constant adjustments.

And just to comment on other posts, there is zero vibration and the tyres are therigt pressure and balancedto+-0.

This is exactly what I experience- mostly in Comfort mode, Sport seems to help considerably....my E70 had no issues.

For you 120mph+ guys... there's no way I'm getting up that fast unless I was on a stretch of freeway through the desert and could literally see miles ahead. It's never me or my car I'm worried about, rather the yahoos that may do something stupid that I won't have time to react to.
LA to Vegas, def some good stretches to do this, but I'm not familiar enough with MD/NJ Kzang to know whether you have open stretches like in Cali. I wouldn't think so.

These SUV's can get to 100 mph and beyond really quick and you don't need a long stretch of road to do this.

Naturally. Wasn't questioning whether or how quickly we can hit 100mph+. My point was that I'd never hit 140mph unless it was on that open stretch of desert freeway where I could see everything ahead of me for a mile or more. Hell, I get near misses when cruising at 80mph and someone decides to pull into the left/fast lane because they are oblivious.
