Only one of the mufflers seem to be working... Dumb question
On x5 it seems that only one- left side muffler is working as i see vapor/smoke coming out of it... The one on right side feels like a dummy one though i know that should not be the case... Is it same across all bmw's ??? Not sure

For the 35i the right side exhaust is closed until it reaches a certain RPM. I believe it is around 3,500 or so when it will open up. There are mods you can do to keep the flap opened at all times, but I am not sure if it would cause any harm to the exhaust or not.
If you upgrade your exhaust to the M performance exhaust then both are opened full time. Hope that answers your question.

No coding required as far as I know. Look up Golf Tee mod and check out this thread on some of the 3 series guys on the mod. I've read in the past that this mod would cause some issues with backpressure and the car may lose some low end torque. I don't know if this is true or not.

^^^ Not sure you're up to it? You pull a vacuum line and shove a golf tee in it, voila! On the F15, because its electronic, just start the vehicle up from cold, ensure the flap is open (both pipes flowing), remove electrical connector, and the flap will now remain open. Putting into Sport mode should also open the flaps, I know it does on other BMW's.

Another mystery solved! Can't thank you guys enough - i was wondering about this last night and scratching my head.
Also, thanks to this forum, found the cargo net AND figured out an easy way to remove the safety label on the passenger side console. |

Noticed that too on my N55 135i, I actually like it. For a stock exhaust (wife's daily driver), it actually sounds pretty good.

You may get a desired acoustic characteristic from this mod, but the pressure in the pipe is calculated and affects engine/power and emission system performance. Considerable thought was placed into the design by setting a valve to split the exhaust flow. A drop in back-pressure will certainly affect low RPM torque as r33 has stated.
There is no free lunch with this mod. You don't improve high RPM performance as both pipes are already open then. And you lose the need pressure for correct pulsing and drafting of the flowing gas. Two cents.

Here's an interesting one...
Was behind an X1 for quite a bit just now while heading to dinner. The exhaust tips caught my eye. The car itself has a single muffler with two standard protruding pipes (no actual aesthetic chrome tips). I noticed that the right side pipe looked like it had a metal disc covering it up. Then it dawned on me that it's utilizing the same activated flap system like our F15s. I kept waiting for the flap to open, thinking that it hadn't because we never reached 30mph. When we got to a red light, though, that's when the flap opened! It has reverse logic compared to our cars. Whenever the car got under 10mph, the flap would open. Above that, the flap would close. Wonder why they even bother to employ this on the X1. The diameter of the tailpipe itself is probably no bigger than a quarter and the flap is aft of the muffler, not before, so I don't see the benefit. Must have some positive aspect otherwise the engrs wouldn't design it in and add to the total BOM cost of the car.

Most likely one of the reasons in my note above. You can google exhaust pressure....there is quite a bit of science to it, and wider is only better in some situations, and higher pressure, in others. And like a race car, when faster flow is needed, the sudden opening can create draft opportunities. I would not mess with this.

Definitely agree. My point was that the flap was so "downstream" of the exhaust itself that it doesn't make sense on the surface. You'd think they'd put it further back by where both pipes exit the single muffler...

Hi guys so I did the same thing I drove around in sports mode for my 2016 x5 for awhile, at high speed for about 25 minutes. And I came back home quickly removed the plug under the exhaust. And I still see no smoke or anything coming out of my passenger side exhaust this is frustrating.

I do believe that method doesn't work on our cars. Physical removal of the flap is the answer IIRC. I'm sure Ben will chime in here as he's the one that did it prior to returning his car back to stock.
ROI not worth in IMO. It's not going to turn the exhaust into a grumbling MPE. How many people are going to walk up to you and point out that "one of your exhaust pipes is clogged"?
