This is a 2014. Picked up in July.
I really haven't been thinking much about details like this - before I saw this thread.
Just for your info, I have the Interior light pack too, option 563.

Seems this light-ring is really confusing.

This is also - IMHO - what I feel is a fascinating ting with BMW - all the endless options and ways things can be configured/made. :-)

Are we sure it isn't the ambient lighting from above shining down and reflecting the light on the metallic surface of the knob?

Mine is 2014 and has the ceramic ones. No light though...

Isn't the interior light (Ambient Lighting) standard now, at least in USA?

HAHAHA. Secret.

I turned the car on, in the garage (door open) and exterior lights came on as they were set on auto. I had ambient lights on set to all orange.

Will try mobile site for photo, as the desktop is telling me there are security token issues and my photos are not getting uploaded.

Looks like it's an upgraded controller.

Basically, there's a SINGLE large LED or at least 2-4 LED lights under the WHOLE controller that shine upward to light up everything. The knob you see in @MattBianco's controller has enough space to allow those LEDs to shine through, thus lighting up.

Sort of like that, but more like "what are you doing in the garage? get out of the car..."

I was able to turn off the LED a single way: by turning off the headlights. The ambient has nothing to do with it. They turn on with headlights, either on manual or with "auto" which triggers headlights to on in my garage.

Is it possible the previous version that wasn't upgraded has light around the ring at the bottom not at the top like E70?

Also, I couldn't tell from those shots, do arrows glow orange too? They did in E70.

Mine was delivered in Jan 2015, and it lights up. This controller is with the touchpad. I haven't noticed it all these days and following this discussion I looked at it this morning, and even in sunlight it's visible. I do have interior light package.

Arrows don't light up, just a ring around the the writing pad, upper surface.

None of the ceramic controllers light up. Not sure why, but they don't.
