Car is 1000s of miles away at home..... Had wanted to report this for some time, and found a quiet moment now.
When you pop the trunk, or open doors you will notice the pearl/metallic 2nd layer of the three layer paint system is missing. At least it is that way in wife's. Anyone else? It took me a long time to notice this, which is visible in some lights/shades only. How much did BMW save per car by skipping a few hundred inches of 2nd layer cover? $25? |

This is common with almost all manufacturers but usually more visible between metal and plastic trim. Here's an example of my Bellanova White Pearl Acura where the beak is more of a cream color... Whereas the rest of the car is bright white. Drove me insane after I noticed it.

Its normal since during the E39 5 Series that parts behind door jams or under trunk panels dont get clear coated. This makes them appear slightly different if the sun shines on those parts with the doors or trunk open.
Normal cross all BMW and many other makes models. Its more noticable on some makes than others. Its because the paint robots dont open the doors or trunk during the clear coat process.

Trust me we have a 2012 RR Supercharged $120k truck and it is no better than any X5. It has some neat trim features and a great ride but wear and tear and service is god awful. Full brakes after 30000 miles at $2500 a pop is ridiculous plus over $2000 for new tires. Not impressed, never have been and still not. And we have owned a few Range Rovers in the past 20 years.
