Car is 1000s of miles away at home..... Had wanted to report this for some time, and found a quiet moment now.

When you pop the trunk, or open doors you will notice the pearl/metallic 2nd layer of the three layer paint system is missing. At least it is that way in wife's. Anyone else?

It took me a long time to notice this, which is visible in some lights/shades only.

How much did BMW save per car by skipping a few hundred inches of 2nd layer cover? $25?

This is common with almost all manufacturers but usually more visible between metal and plastic trim. Here's an example of my Bellanova White Pearl Acura where the beak is more of a cream color... Whereas the rest of the car is bright white. Drove me insane after I noticed it.

It's because they're made in the USA. The more I look at the little details on my X5, the more I get pissed that I didn't take the time to really look over the car at delivery.

Paint defects, poor fitting trim, M door sills peeling upwards. Nothing like my previous BMW's

Hmm, Honda and Toyota is able to make cars here with great build quality, so I don't think this is the reason.

Its normal since during the E39 5 Series that parts behind door jams or under trunk panels dont get clear coated. This makes them appear slightly different if the sun shines on those parts with the doors or trunk open.

Normal cross all BMW and many other makes models.
Its more noticable on some makes than others.

Its because the paint robots dont open the doors or trunk during the clear coat process.

My SSII M3 has that. When you open the trunk, the paint inside is just plain flat silver.

Thanks for clarifying. I suspect others may need a closer inspection to detect it.

After visiting the factory observing the level of automation in assembly, I do not think there is much variation in build quality. If the car lacks quality it is in the original design of the parts. Although I am actually quite happy with mine, it would be nice to eliminate more plastic parts in the interior. I'm sure they build to a price point, and give us the level of (or lack of) quality they think we are willing to pay before moving more upscale - i.e. Range rover or Cayenne

Trust me we have a 2012 RR Supercharged $120k truck and it is no better than any X5. It has some neat trim features and a great ride but wear and tear and service is god awful. Full brakes after 30000 miles at $2500 a pop is ridiculous plus over $2000 for new tires. Not impressed, never have been and still not. And we have owned a few Range Rovers in the past 20 years.

I struggled with replacing my 2011 RR Sport/Luxury. My decision to go with a 2015X5 last October turned out to be a good one. I also spent too much $ on brakes and tires with the RR. All said, I think the RR is a more "stately" vehicle, but the X5 is much better quality and way less expensive to maintain. Trouble free, comfortable, and responsive.
