Engine repair under warranty or new engine?
I purchased a 2016 X5 50i with M sport package (59,000 miles) from the dealer with an extended warranty (third party).
It has now failed the oil consumption test. BMW refuses to cover the repair or engine replacement as I purchased the car secondhand after the class action settlement was announced. My extended warranty will cover the repair of the valve stem seals and the timing case cover gaskets for an invoiced amount of ~$12,600. The dealership has offered to do a brand new engine replacement instead if I want to kick in an additional $4,000. Does anyone think the additional price is worth a brand new engine? |

Sounds like a crap deal all round, inc towards your warranty company. $12k for the work, and/or additional $4k out of pocket for a new engine?
Just put in a new long block with a core swap. If I'm not mistaken on p/n. A new full long block is around $4k for a new unit. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=11_4162 |

Between warranty companies and dealerships the Monkey-business knows no bounds.
I hate both and always feel like I need to bathe after having any contact with either. Personally, I would give them the $4k and get the new motor and put it all behind me. |

Go for the new engine!
I know, the cost sucks! I spent about the same on replacing mine, but felt it was worth it at the time with crazy car prices. I have plans to replace the X5, but having spent to much on it last year, I'm holding on to it until the right deal shows up, since I still really enjoy driving it. Point is, if you like your X5, it is a great vehicle worth the extra 4k for a new block. Not a POS rustbucket not worth taking care of. With a new block, you will also get other wear parts replaced. You have lower mileage than I had when mine (120k) went bad, and I don't know what went wrong with your engine. It's still high mileage enough there are other parts that are slowly wearing down too. like this (link to post by sophisticated redneck in regards to chain tensioner) I had a leaking oilpan seal, that BMW wanted $$$$ to replace, but was not needed with new engine etc. Anyway, whatever went wrong with my engine, including a bad injector; It caused scoring of a cylinder and block was toast. If there is any chance that happened to your engine, if you don't go for a replacement block, insist on them scoping the cylinders. Also insist on all new injectors at the same time. Just as preventative measure. |

My point on the cost of a new long block been only $4k, is try to get it covered under that $12K cost. $7k for 3 days of work, should cover BMWs rate. With the $1k in parts for any gaskets, hoses, o-rings, etc.
Them doing the seals at $12k, will include them taking your current engine, gearbox, subframe all out. If it's BMW, they wont be doing the seals in the car. Majority of that $12k cost is going to be the labour (time taken) to do the actual seal replacement, not the engine in/out. Talk to a different BMW shop get an estimate on doing a straight up engine swap. No mention of seals, etc. If your insurer was happy in covering the $12k for the seals, if this BMW shop is under that for a swap. Win! Last edited by Chilled; 03-11-2023 at 06:53 PM.. |

The records on the vehicle VIN that every car maker keeps will tell them. The records for vehicle registration will tell them. CARFAX and others will tell them. The service management systems (repair order write-up, accounting, parts inventory, etc, etc. software dealers pay for) has history data that feeds into it that they can look at by clicking a tab to try to give repair history whether at dealer or other. The privacy of the owners is masked usually but it can refer to that field as owner 1, owner 2, so forth. If you look at Cargurus, Autotrader for an add it will list owner count. Not a very well kept secret.

Welcome to the N63 kerfuffle. BMW Rather pay with engines on a case by case basis than a recall. (That and the N63 oil consumption lawsuit)

First that comes to mind was a guy a while back was trying to get a flood salvage to run. In the end, ended up buy one brand new, and getting it installed. |

It just blows my mind a modern engine is toast at 59k! they should be ashamed! and its not like its a one off deal either... I have 100 on mine and so far so good. knock on wood... having had 5 bimmers, im still surprised at the silly things that break and craptacular engineering ... sensors going bad one can understand. But this is a fundamental engine design problem...
