2016 X5 x35d US

In the market for X5 x35d (so far I've heard raving reviews about 35d vs 35i). I'm here in California and diesel is cheaper by ~80cents where I live.. Any thoughts on why I SHOULDN'T be buying a diesel?

Also, I hear diesel doesn't go into production until Dec. Is that true? What are the differences between 15 & 16? (I', aware there wont be major changes) but I'm interested to know the details on what exactly is changing (not sure if details are out yet). I tried looking for more info but nothing substantial shows up on differences. I'm aware there's 40e coming in.. I 'm more curious about any changes in 35d..

i just traded my e70 35d for a f15 35i. diesel was great,awesome torque, but started having def tank and sensor issues. all cars will have some sort of problem that requires maintenance, choose what you find will work best for you

Here is the 2016 X5 pricing guide with options. I went with the 35d after knowing several owners who love them. One is just shy of 100k miles with nothing but regular maintenance. The low end torque is awesome as is the MPG.

You cannot generalize about reliability with either diesel or gas unless there is something seriously flawed with a particular design. For instance, the early 80s diesels from Detroit where they took gas engines and pressurized them to become diesel and they all failed.

BMW has the largest share of diesels in Europe, a point of comfort for me.

Like others have pointed out, you can get emission errors, but that is also true with the gas engines.

The key factors for me were:

- better MPG
- longer range
- great mountain climbing (torque)

I deal with the smelly pumps by carrying disposal (ultra thin) gloves that cost $2 per 50.

we just took delivery of our new 35d F15 and we love it so far. First tank 28 mpgs! that was with some higher speeds over a number of mountain passes too. Great car! i have had two 335i's as well as an X70 35d in the past. the 35d is perfect for an SUV. It just fits it. No regrets!

The 35d has treated me well. I have about 2K miles on mine. My only complaint is the smell. Once it gets warm or I keep it in Sport for a while, there is an odor to it. That being said, I am sensitive to that type of thing so it probably does not bother most.

I think you are smelling cosmoline burning off -it is some sort of metal penetrating oil product that reduces oxidization risk. It will burn off within 2-3k miles. I bet it was worse around 300-500 miles. I actually called BMW at one point to say I could smell something burning. Dealer checked it out, and forum members here lithe in that it was cosmoline and not unusual to see it linger up to several thousand miles. Go on a nice long drive of 200+ miles and it should burn off.

There are not published changes for the 16 except and increase in the deist stun charge. I just ordered a 15. The will start production on the 16 in December. So it may be January until you would get one. I have it from a good source that a delay in production without changes may indicate new suppliers for some components that could lead to reliability problems.

I ordered the truck last week. It will be built Aug 3-6.
