I came from a 2004 Infiniti FX35 AWD with 20" OEM wheels. We own four other SUVs aside from my X5 ('04 FX35 (my previous car that I gave to my youngest brother), '05 Infiniti QX56, '14 ML350 4Matic, '14 ML63 AMG). What's your question exactly so we can better assist you?

R500 AMG (not a true SUV), and LX470 (a true SUV).

We currently have an L322 Range Rover and a Discovery 3. I would have +1 to another Land Rover but I really wanted a diesel. The Disco 3 is a little roomier, especially in the cargo area. Comfort is a little better in both of our Rovers. You just get used to having adjustable arm rests. On long trips (400+ miles) the center console/arm rest in the X5 leaves a lot to be desired, IMO. Fuel mileage is far and away better in our X35d. We have the HK sound system in all three. Pretty much the same across the board. Connectivity is better on the X5. I think a lot of that just has to do with it being a '14.

I came from an 09 Cayenne Base to the 35d.

when I was shopping this summer, I was seriously looking at the Diesel Cayenne however, I was told in June that it'd be at least 6 months to order a Cayenne (as the '15s weren't announced yet and they had no info on them) or take whatever was on the lot.

When you start comparing similar features on both vehicles, the Cayenne Diesel at least similarly equipped to the x35d would run about $20-22k more than the x5. Yes, base prices are about the same, but as everyone knows, Porsche is expensive in their vast options list. You want a pano sunroof, that's $1600, You want 19" wheels, that's $3,000; you want body cladding like the X5 M, that's $4,000; you want a Bose Soundsystem, that's $2,000; you want a leather covered dashboard, that's $5,000 for the upgraded seats and upholstery; adjustible/air suspension, $4,000. You get the idea.

The other thing that got me was the price of Porsche Service. Whenever mine went into the service bay (every 10k miles) it was at least $300. New brakes were $1,200 per axle; Change those spark plugs, $700. At the end of the day, service on the Porsche over 4 years/50k miles probably would have added another $4-6k to it.

When I did the math, I just couldn't justify another $20-25k on a similar vehicle to the X5.

We were in the exact same boat. We cross shopped the Cayenne and X5 really hard. My wife and I both loved the way the Cayenne Diesel drove. Interior was a titch smaller in the second row. The better $ value was the X5, by far. I still want a Cayenne, though.

I do get the idea. I was waiting for the facelifted 2015 Cayenne for quite some time. Everything you mentioned above impacted my decision to switch to an X5... Along with the fact that there was no local Porsche dealer near me. When the 2015 diesel was announced with the absence of the 300+ hp (Audi) diesel that synched it to switch to the X5. I wanted my X5 to drive "smaller" and handle closer to the Cayenne so I ordered DHP. Hopefully the best of both worlds Sport and Luxury with all the cool BMW electronics, which the Porsche lacks...like HUD etc...

There is something about the Cayenne, a very fun and exciting vehicle to drive. It really put a smile on my face. I hope my X5 with DHP has the same effect on me.
I figured if I bought the 2015 Cayenne now, then in 3 years a totally new model will come out. I like to keep my vehicles for a while so my Cayenne would become dated fairly quickly. The X5 is very current and will be so for a long time.

Denial rant over...

All kidding aside, I really am looking forward to my X5.

Came from a Lexus RX450h, very pleased with my F15 40D, very quick and lots of toys plus the in car tech is much better, being a bit of a techno geek.

Plus the monthly contract hire price price is less for my F15 compared to my RX for a car that costs £10k more for the same contact terms!

You all surprise me - but appreciate the honest opinions. I've been driving the X5 35i back to back with the Cayenne S, and prefer the X5. Am I missing something? I love the look of the Porsche and want to get it, but for some reason the X5 feels like the better vehicle to me. Why do all the BMW owners say the Cayenne is better?

The X5 brakes and Cayenne seem even. The X5 turbo torque seems better, the X5 ride is better, the Cayenne steering is better, X5 interior better....

You're not missing anything. Both are great vehicles. The suspension on the Cayenne is just much stiffer because it's more performance/road oriented. The interior on the X5 is newer for sure, but both are equally nice. After driving both, I prefer my X5. I also think the looks of the X5 are much nicer than the recent Cayenne update...it's front has become way too pointy for some reason. It reminds me of a big mouse, lol. A lot of vehicle manufacturers have started shaping their cars from animal ideas. Take a look at the Infiniti QX70 (shark) and QX80 (manta ray).

This was my experience as well with my Cayenne S (2012). Also, the v8 engine and transmission is not as smooth as it should be for the cost of this vehicle.

So how do you find your X5 vs 2012 Cayenne S? Which X5 did you get?

I toyed around with the idea of a Cayenne (basic model, semi-decent specs - simply because Porsche charges an arm and a leg & a bit for any & every optional extra) before settling down to an X5. Both cost about the same in Singapore - about S$380,000 (roughly USD$306,000 - don't ask, prices are crazy here), but the X5, for that same amount of money, was loaded to the hilt, my cup runneth over and came with the damn kitchen sink included.

Best of all, the X5 seated 7 (though it's just wifey and I in the house) - you'll never know when well-meaning, free-loading relatives might wanna come for a visit!

If you like driving porsche is the one to go - sorry but x5 steering is very artificial despite tight body - and interior is also a bit plastic (for instance the msport gear selector) - if luxury than rrover sport or rr.
Also very carefull if you want a diesel!! bmw's are very noisy and agricultural. reason i went for porsche. i drive 40m every day and noise drove me mad. that and steering feel (or lack of) made me go with porsche
