It's worth reading up on the legacy of sealed beam headlights in the US if you really want to hate the DOT. Remember when ever car had round or rectangular headlights only? Thanks, USDOT. |

As stated I've ordered the Lighting Package.
Should I get it "coded" to make the anti-dazzle active does that negate the need for switching (either automatically or manually) between high beams and low beams? |

Yes, code. Without it the investment in the package does not offer good value. You will be very impressed with the low beams overall.

I should have said "If I get it coded". In other words, when anti-dazzle is active does it mean you never have to toggle between high and low beams?

Yes, although you have to hit the A on the stalk to turn on the auto feature. Although that can be coded on as default as well.

I would not code it to default on if you have the Auto button on the stalk, since there are occasions you don't want high beams such has during fog or a snowstorm.

On mine, I hit the A button below the BC button on the controller on the left side, and it goes on Auto mode. When in Auto mode it does what Auto mode beams do plus anti-dazzle features. When not in Auto mode, it is like any other car. Otherwise the coding allows the Auto mode to do more, without affecting the manual operation of beams.

I did a random research on this when i wanted to get auxiliary lights for my jeep wrangler rubicon!
I found out - 1. The Led's cannot match the long range distance/ performance of the Xenons, HID's 2. All high performance auxiliary lamps used in rally's, racing are HID's/ Xenons. Check out Light Force 240 HID's! 3. The LED's look aesthetically better due to the color! However, research shows that lights with a slight yellow tinge (between 4500-5000K) are better w.r.t. performance! So, if you want performance, long distance performance, go with stock X5 F15 lights, if you drive only in the city (not on highways at 60+ mph) and want the light's to look good to oncoming traffic, and make their (oncoming traffic's) life easier, upgrade to LED

Its possible if your headlight was to break for some reason and they found out it was coded they could refuse to cover it under warranty. They cannot deny another part though because you coded the headlight.

Why did BMW choose reflector-based LEDs?
I didn't want to create a separate thread for this question: Can anyone tell me why BMW opted not to use projectors for the LED package instead of the housing reflectors? Wouldn't projectors amplify and distribute the light more effectively as with modern HIDs? I know Acura, Lexus, and possibly Audi use projectors with their LED headlights.

The LED's work great especially with the anti-dazzle. I've never had better lighting than this on any previous vehicle. |

The X5 without the LED headlights looks quite plain in my book. After the M Sport package, it was the second "must have" on my list. Completely transforms the front end, and make it that much more aggressive.

I recently had the HBA coding done for my LED lighting package. There is a noticeable difference when this feature is enabled. For me the largest improvement is the way more of what is in front of you is illuminated. Overtaking vehicles allows you to really see the motors working to keep the hotspot of the beam out of the drivers view as you roll on by.
I'm very pleased that I now realize all of the benefit of this expensive option. It's really a shame that the USDOT does not see fit to encourage the use of a technology that is widely accepted everywhere else in the world.

Somewhat related: I have the xenon lights. Only one of the eyes on both sides light up low/high beam what's the other eye for? I've seen pictures of cars with LED where both eyes light up, I guess when using the high beam, which begs the question what did BMW leave it blank for the xenon?
