How to update Navigation Software on 2015 X5

I have a 2015 X5 .. Model on paperwork is 15XG X5 xDrive35i

I am wanting to update the Navigation software to the latest version.
How do I do that? Where online would be a good place to get the software?
Do they use DVD's or Thumb drives?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

2018-2 is the latest. There is a link in a thread from last week, just search.

You download the files, put them in a USB (1 by 1 if 8gb, or all together if 32gb) and the car will detect and launch update.

You will need a FSC code, can generate yourself or buy here or on ebay for cheap.

From the point you put in the FSC code, how long does the update take?

I don't remember exactly, but I remember having a bite to eat and then taking a shower while it was updating, so probably at least an hour.

Plus it can be resumed if you turn off the car during the update.

You can get code online or from the dealer if you feel like paying more. There are also ways to generate your own code and get the maps. I opted for the first options was easier.

I don't advise turning your car off in the middle of an update... But I do suggest instead of running you motor, you get a battery tender.

Have done it multiple times without issue. It seems to be a feature. When you restart the car, it asks if you want to resume the update.

I'm not saying you can't. I'm just saying it's best to do it one-go because you never know what happens when the iDrive cuts off the power during the middle of an update because you shut off the car. You know how you can brick your phone when you install updates, just imagine something going wrong during the write process and the car it doesn't resume properly.

It's a totally different thing. The map update is basically just copying the database from the USB Stick to the internal HDD. You can see on the stick the map database is divided into 5 different folders. The updating process copies the folders one by one, so, if you have to interrupt the process, it will resume later by overwriting the same folder it was working on before interruption.

No issues at all.

I usually just do the update driving to/from work. It does take good 30 minutes now from a 32gb USB. I will not advise to pause and resume as my car has gone to sleep a few times while updating and it did not resume so in the worst case you might just have to restart.

Also with the FSC code, sometimes the car will not ask for it prior to update, and ask after update.

@alphaod - the system copies independent of the data on the idrive first then and then when finished, will replace the maps on the next idrive restart. You can have navigation on based on old maps while updating. So its not a overwrite and is safe to stop and try and resume.

If you haven't done the update yet, 2019-1 map is now the latest.

Is the update process the same on the 2018 models? I'm stuck on 2017-2. Genius says it should happen automatically over the air.

If you Google "BMW NEXT 2019-1 Maps" there are people who sell them. I get mine from a guy that a member of this forum referred me to. They are pretty reliable, I just updated mine last night.

I'm cheap. I'll wait until someone posts a link to a torrent file
