Sunglasses Holder (Compartment) from BMW UK (Why not BMW NA?!)

I just found out on the BMW UK website that F15 in UK are actually equipped with Glasses Compartment. I also found the description of the compartment from the Owners Manual.

Could any UK F15 owner confirm that your X5s are equipped with this sunglasses holder located in between the interior mirror and interior lamps?

My X5 is a Canada Spec (North America Spec) and I don't get this compartment. It's just a piece of pseudo sitting there. (Good Job! BMW )

I'm looking to do a retrofit for this Glasses Compartment, so if anyone happens to know the part number of it please please please share it here.

@ljx*****n, hmm. I wonder if it is only Canada spec. Because I do have it in the US spec. Or maybe it is on specific option package.

It looks to be a DIY, with the plastic piece removed, and the spectacles component added. See this thread with some input from me:

Wut...seriously?!
I thought it's a Standard Missing option for NA...
Now, that's Interesting, because my truck is almost fully loaded except the Active Steering and Dynamic Handling packages. Perhaps like you said, maybe it's just the Canada Spec.
Btw, could you help me find the part number for it, I guess it must be a piece of cake for you, Ben.

Here are the parts in the color codes: I printed it from the website because the one i use always seems to change images and the links break.

Thanks for sharing, MattBianco. I was trying to find similar thread but didn't expect to find the DIY instruction under that thread. Very detail DIY by the way. Really appreciate that.

Now, it's pretty much clear that it is indeed just another BMW Canada's Ripoff.
Haven't done the survey yet, will do later for sure.

Thanks,

Ray

If you have a good dealer, they will do this for you cheap, say under $100.

Not true sir. Maybe it's part of the Extended Storage option? It's not in my car, built April this year.

Not standard on my 2014 UK model - i think only as part of another package.

This kind of thing really annoys me.... Cars for a quarter of the price include a sunglasses holder and it's ridiculous that BMW bothered to design and manufacturers the piece of plastic needed if you don't opt for the sunglasses holder. It should be standard or it should be available as a standalone option for about £2.50.

It's not standard -it's part of Extended Storage pack. As it happens the holder is quite shallow so not too good for their intended purpose! I keep my in centre armrest.

Before you do any retrofit, you should be aware that the compartment is worthless if you have any higher end sunglasses like Oakleys, Ray Bans, etc. The only glasses that will fit are the very basic, flat variety that you might find at a local discount store. Standard corrective glasses might also fit.

Anything that has a curve to fit your face will not fit. The pocket is too shallow. I was happy that they added one until I actually tried to use it. Now my glasses go in their case in the center console.

Higher end sunglasses can also be smaller and fit. I do agree it is a small compartment and bigger model of glasses will not fit (oakley might not because of its general shape as they fold. Mine fit and I love this option, very practical, like extremly practical.

Disclaimer: angry post inc

My Ray-Bans fit just fine however there's an angle to it because the space is indeed very, very small. Plus as usual my big FU goes to BMW for making this a part of a storage pack for extra $ (luckily I noticed this when ordering, would've been really "fun" to get the car w/o glasses holder). If you want to milk your customers - at least do things that matter like bringing back the velour inside the door bins, central arm-rest storage, etc. instead of cheap plastics and saving a buck here and there (damn ///Marketing boys).

P.S. On a sunglasses related note... Another fun experience of the 21st century: standing in a huge eye-glasses shop and spending at least 30 min with the sales guy running back and forth trying to find something non-polarized that is not looking like shit.

My glasses that i mentioned earlier are polarized which does not do favors for HUD.

I've got this compartment in mine (Eu spec, don't know with witch option brought it though).
Anyway, as mentionned, it is very small : my Prada sunglasses doesn't fit at all, but my brand new Dior Chicago 2 fits perfectly, so it's not a matter of price

U.S. X6 and I do have this. I never tried it with sunglasses, just assumed it wouldn't fit. I put my sunglasses in the glovebox. I converted mine to hold the controllers for my Audison Bit1 processor and AL Priority Laser Jammer.
