Dongle from your insurance company.

I'm wondering if anyone plugs in any kind of dongle from your insurance company in your X5?

My agent talked me about this today and asked if I'd like to save additional 10% in my first premium (6-months). I'm not worrying about the privacy things and am aware of the items they want to monitor. I know th hard brake is the key point... I'm fine with all that.

But I'm kind of scared by two things -

. Someone may be able to remote to my car and mess up my codes then screw up some features or sensors on my X5. These dongles are easily hacked.

. None of insurance companies can deny and they have to obey the court order to surrender the data if you're involved in any of lawsuits or accidents.

Maybe I'm too exaggerated but they make me worried. I said NO to her. 10% can't buy these...

I even don't know if the dongle is working with X5 or not. (All the insurances kinds of say BMW is compatible.)

10% isn't worth it to me either. I am also not willing to connect one to my vehicles after reading stores like this. http://www.kirotv.com/news/news/insu...-damage/nfdQw/

My GF did it on her 328i and had no issues but i'm not going to take the chance with as many electronics that are in our vehicles.

I wouldn't take that chance. Not worth it in my humble opinion.

I got a dongle to go whit the key and so does everyone here in Sweden that buyes the f15 at bmw, the dongle is a gprs tracker if the car gets stolen and you get a discount on your insurance premium.

Very interesting. Something like LoJack in US?

If so, isn't it possible this tracker is the redundant since BMW SOS Ctr here can help track the car location after the stolen vehicle is reported to the police?

I tried it briefly, and returned it for the premium increase.

It's incredibly stressful to drive with. If you brake hard at any point you get three sharp beeps from the device warning you you've been "dinged". It made me drive more dangerously, as I held off braking as long as possible - keeping it soft and smooth until I had absolutely no choice.

It's a dumb device - no remote coding etc, it's just a one-way send of GPS, time, and accelerometer data. They can easily track, should they choose to do so, your speed too.... too much stress, too much privacy invasion.

Good and Bad

I have the dongle for 3 yrs now on my honda, getting a good discount. As for my X5 I had it and within few days I started getting a Battery Drain error. So removed it from BMW since then

You would be crazy to do it. Yea you save a but of money but it also opens you up for the insurance denying any claims. They will simply bury a clause somewhere deep in the policy that until dongle data has been reviewed. Then they could say they will not cover the claim because of data which shows you Violated the policy some how.

Besides, the more people who give into this crap, the easier it will be for the insurance companies to make it a mandatory requirement for all drivers.

Ten percent is def NOT worth it IMO, especially if it's only for the first six months. It would take something like 20% in perpetuity before I'd consider it.
Granted, if I had five pts on my record and was paying $500/month...

Yep, 100% redundant. Also, the OBD2 scanner isn't hidden like in an F25 where it faces upward. Our OBD2 socket faces us. If the dongle even has lights, it will be very obvious in the foot well area. Good for people that have it and are driving without issues and saving money, but it's really not worth it as other have said regarding the legal issues and how insurance companies are smarter than consumers; they will always find a loophole to screw you over - that's what most insurance companies do for a living.

I think we have something different than what NA is getting, we get a small gprs unit that you just have around the keychange whit your car "key" if somebody drives of whit the car absent of the gprs unit the alarm goes and "they" track the car and notify police Of theft.

Who trust insurance companies selling retail coverage? I would not take it if my insurance was free with the dongle.

Btw, this is what I mentioned above. The device is technically vulnerable. And, it's possible hackers can feed the signals back to the dongle/vehicle.

Dongle. Good grief. Isn't that something JAV (Japan Adult Video) "actresses" use as props in their "movies"?

Damn it, I gotta get out of the house more often
